Implementing Siemens PLC Data Acquisition and Polling via an Industrial Smart Gateway

In recent years, with the continuous advancement of automation technology, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) have become increasingly prent in industrial automation systems. Siemens PLCs, renowned for their stability and reliability, can deliver even more precise control and higher production efficiency when combined with cyclic data acquisition.

The Wutongbolian Industrial Smart Gateway supports data collection from all Siemens PLC models. It offers protocol parsing, data acquisition, and edge-computing capabilities, and can poll PLCs in turn to transmit data to cloud platforms or SCADA hosts. This enables fault alarms, remote monitoring, remote control, and remote maintenance.

1. Data acquisition  
   In industrial production, various data points must be collected and processed for production scheduling and process monitoring. Cyclic polling acquires data from diverse devices—PLCs, instruments, sensors, industrial robots, CNC machines, etc.—and processes it to boost productivity.

2. Remote control  
   The gateway’s polling routine supports bidirectional communication, allowing remote control of equipment such as automated production lines, wastewater-treatment PLCs, and pump-motor start/stop sequences.

3. Remote monitoring  
   By polling device status, the gateway provides real-time oversight of faults, start-up events, and process parameters, enabling visualized monitoring and intelligent management.

4. Energy monitoring  
   The gateway can poll smart meters for water and electricity consumption, enabling real-time energy-data tracking. This supports energy-saving initiatives by identifying optimization opportunities and reducing overall consumption.
